The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Investigates Officer-Involved Shooting in Quitman, Georgia

An 18-year-old man, identified as Brian Williams from Quitman, Georgia, was injured in an officer-involved shooting that took place on the 400 block of North Quincy Street in Quitman. The incident occurred after Quitman Police Chief Roy Hart requested the GBI to step in and conduct an investigation.

According to the GBI News Release, the shooting unfolded on April 12, 2024, when Quitman Police were responding to an earlier shooting where a vehicle was targeted multiple times while occupied by several individuals. Upon receiving information about the incident, police officers spotted the vehicle involved in the shooting while on patrol.

Two officers in a marked Quitman Police Tahoe attempted to perform a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle. However, upon activating their lights and sirens, the front seat passenger jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. The pursuing officer chased the suspect through several yards in an attempt to make an arrest.

During the chase, the suspect dropped an item on two separate occasions, stopping to retrieve it and appearing to conceal it in his waistband before continuing to run. Despite verbal commands from the officer to halt, the suspect failed to comply. Subsequently, the officer fired multiple shots at the suspect, striking him at least once.

Following the shooting, additional law enforcement officers arrived at the scene to aid in the search for the suspect. Approximately 20 minutes later, the suspect was apprehended while hiding in a shed in a nearby yard. He was provided with medical attention for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with the case set to be reviewed by District Attorney Brad Shealy of the Southern Judicial Circuit upon its completion.
