Calgary Officer Cleared by Alberta’s Police Watchdog After Shooting Armed Man in Temple

Last month, a Calgary police officer was cleared by Alberta’s police watchdog after shooting an armed man in the leg during a confrontation in Temple. The incident took place on Feb. 29 in the area of Temple Drive N.E., after several people reported seeing the man, identified as 36-year-old Akol Acuil Piok, carrying a gun and acting erratically.

Details of the Incident

According to reports, officers were called to the scene around 7 p.m. following reports of attempted carjackings and a robbery involving the suspect. Witnesses also stated that the man had struck someone in the head with a gun, which was later discovered to be an airsoft pistol.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team conducted an investigation and found that the officer on the scene had identified himself and repeatedly instructed the suspect to show his hands and drop the gun. Despite the officer’s commands, the suspect continued to advance towards him, prompting the officer to step back towards his police vehicle.

As the suspect approached the officer’s vehicle, he made a sudden movement towards his gun, prompting the officer to fire three shots, one of which struck the suspect in the leg. The suspect then threw his gun into the road before falling to the ground. Additional officers arrived at the scene to assist in handcuffing the suspect and providing first aid.

ASIRT Investigation Findings

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team stated that the conclusive video evidence from officers’ body-worn cameras and a police cruiser enabled a swift conclusion to the investigation. The report indicated that the officer had exhausted all options by issuing multiple lawful commands and attempting to create a safe distance from the suspect.

As a result of the investigation, Piok was charged with three counts of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order.

Conclusion

The incident in Temple serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by police officers in high-stress situations. The swift actions of the Calgary officer in this case were deemed justified by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, highlighting the importance of thorough investigations in cases involving the use of force.
