Manhunt Underway for Suspect Accused of Killing New Mexico State Police Officer in Quay County

A manhunt is currently underway for the individual responsible for the tragic death of a New Mexico State police officer in Quay County. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jaremy Smith from Marion, South Carolina, is wanted on several charges including First Degree Murder, Armed Robbery, and Tampering with Evidence.

Details of the Incident

The fatal incident took place early Friday morning on I-40 near Tucumcari, where officer Justin Hare was responding to a call for assistance due to a flat tire. It was during this encounter that Smith allegedly shot and killed officer Hare, before fleeing the scene in the officer’s patrol car.

Officer Hare’s body was later discovered on the frontage road of I-40 near mile marker 312, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

Discovery of Stolen Vehicle

Through their investigation, authorities revealed that the BMW used by Smith belonged to a missing South Carolina woman, 52-year-old Phonesia Machado-Fore, who was found deceased on Friday night. She was identified as a paramedic.
