TUCUMCARI, NEW MEXICO POLICE OFFICER FATALLY SHOT ON INTERSTATE 40

In a devastating turn of events, New Mexico state police officer Justin Hare, 35, was tragically shot and killed on Interstate 40 in Tucumcari, New Mexico. The incident took place near mile marker 320, approximately 50 miles west of the Texas state line.

Suspect at Large

Following the shooting, multiple law enforcement agencies launched a manhunt for the suspect, who was last seen on foot wearing a brown hoodie and jacket on the I-40 Frontage Road between Montoya and Newkirk, around 30 miles west of Tucumcari. Authorities have warned the public that the suspect is armed and dangerous, urging anyone with information to call 911 immediately.

Investigation Details

According to reports, Officer Hare was conducting a welfare check on the interstate when he noticed a vehicle pulled over onto the shoulder of the traffic lanes. It was during this encounter that the fatal shooting took place, leaving the entire law enforcement community in shock and mourning.

Government Response

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham expressed her deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “It’s a tragic reminder of the dangers our law enforcement officers face each time they put on a uniform and report for duty.” Cabinet Secretary Jason Bowie also paid tribute to Officer Hare, emphasizing that his sacrifice in safeguarding the state will never be forgotten.
