Tragic Loss in Victoria’s West: Father-of-Two Killed in Mine Collapse

The mining community in Victoria’s west is reeling from a devastating incident that claimed the life of Kurt Hourigan, a beloved father-of-two. The 37-year-old was tragically killed in a mine collapse at the operational Ballarat Gold Mine in Mount Clear on Wednesday.

Hourigan, who hailed from Bruthen in the state’s east near Lakes Entrance, was one of two men who were pinned by rocks in the collapse. The incident occurred just before 5pm, with Hourigan’s body being recovered from the mine the following morning. His colleague, a 21-year-old man, was airlifted to hospital and remains in a critical condition.

Tributes Pour In for Kurt Hourigan

Friends and family have taken to social media to express their grief and share fond memories of Hourigan. His brother, Reece, penned a heartfelt tribute, saying, “I still can’t believe you are gone. I have always looked up to you. Thank you for all the good and bad memories we have shared together. I love you so much, brother.”

Stephanie Coleiro described Hourigan as “the best mate I could ask for,” expressing disbelief at his passing. “I’m still waiting for you to walk in and say it’s just a dumb joke. Love you and miss you so much, mate,” she wrote.

The Tragic Turn of Events

The two men were nearing the end of their shift, which had begun at 7am, when the unsupported ground gave way 500m deep in the mine. They were engaged in a manual-style of mining known as “air legging” when the rockfall occurred.

Fortunately, 29 other workers were able to make it to an underground safety pod during the incident and were brought to the surface unharmed. Australian Workers’ Union Victorian state secretary, Ronnie Hayden, provided insight into the nature of the work being carried out at the time of the collapse.

The mining community is coming together to mourn the loss of Kurt Hourigan and support his family during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy.
