The Incident in Gates County, North Carolina

In a recent incident in Gates County, North Carolina, law enforcement officers were called to U.S. 13 South and Barfield Road after reports of gunshots were heard. Upon arrival, they encountered a man named Awet Hagos outside a business, firing a gun. The situation quickly escalated as Hagos became combative and attempted to disarm a deputy before fleeing into his residence, leading to a four-hour standoff.

The Standoff and Arrest

Gates County Sheriff Ray Campbell recounted the events, stating that Hagos responded aggressively to deputies and had to be subdued with a Taser multiple times during the scuffle. Following his arrest, Hagos was charged with three counts of assault on a government official, three counts of resisting a public officer, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon.

Discovery of Terrorist Watch List Status

After Hagos’ arrest, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed that he was on a terrorist watch list and had been in the area for approximately six months. Hagos, originally from an area near the Yemen border in Africa and having previously lived in Haiti, had been brought to the region by the owner of the Carolina Quick Stop store where the incident occurred.

Legal Proceedings and Custody

Despite his status on the terrorist watch list, Hagos must first face adjudication on state charges before being taken into ICE custody. Currently held in the Albemarle District Jail under a $100,00 bond, the outcome of his case remains uncertain as investigations continue.
