50-Year-Old Mystery Solved in Ledyard, Connecticut

In a breakthrough discovery, State Police officials in Ledyard, Connecticut have announced the resolution of a 50-year-old mystery, all thanks to DNA testing. The previously-anonymous remains of a 1970 homicide victim have finally been identified as Linda Sue Childers from Kentucky.

Identification of Linda Sue Childers

On Wednesday, the Connecticut State Police and Medical Examiner revealed that Linda Sue Childers, who had remained nameless for decades, was positively identified through DNA testing. Her family confirmed that she had been in the northeast prior to her disappearance, shedding light on her past.

Discovery of Remains

The remains of Linda Sue Childers were found in a shallow grave in Ledyard on May 30, 1974, along with another victim. It was only after a witness came forward in December of the same year that the location of the double homicide was revealed. Despite her use of an alias, Childers’ identity remained a mystery until now.

Cause of Death

An autopsy determined that Linda Sue Childers died from a gunshot wound to the head, with the manner of death classified as a homicide. The tragic circumstances surrounding her demise have finally been brought to light after five decades of uncertainty.

Breakthrough in Investigation

After years of fruitless search through various missing persons databases, a breakthrough came in July 2022 when samples were sent to Othram for Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy. By adding DNA from Childers’ remains to the database, investigators were able to reopen the case and make a positive identification in January of this year through her sister.

Closure for the Family

Thanks to the cooperation of Childers’ daughter in providing a DNA sample, the remains were positively identified, bringing closure to her family after decades of uncertainty. The suspects involved in the double homicide were arrested and convicted, although they are now deceased.

This long-awaited resolution has provided answers and closure to a decades-old mystery, giving Linda Sue Childers the recognition and justice she deserves.
