Accident – Death – Obituary News :
The Tragic Road Accident in Semporna, Sabah
It was a normal day in the picturesque town of Semporna, located on the east coast of Sabah, Malaysia. However, tragedy struck when a tour van carrying foreign tourists was involved in a fatal collision with a trailer at KM20 of the route. The incident shook the community and raised concerns about road safety in the area.
Ministry’s Response
Datuk Christina Liew, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment in Sabah, expressed her deep concern over the accident that claimed the lives of two foreign tourists. She emphasized the importance of enhancing road safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Efforts to Improve Road Safety
Liew announced that she would be collaborating with Sri Pelancongan Sabah chairman Ken Pan Ying On to address the issue of road safety, particularly on accident-prone stretches like Jalan Tawau-Semporna. This partnership aims to ensure the safety of both locals and tourists traveling through Sabah.
Details of the Incident
The fatal accident resulted in the deaths of a Singaporean man and a Vietnamese woman, with five others sustaining injuries. Among the injured victims was an 11-year-old girl from Singapore. The tour van driver and two other men were seriously hurt in the collision.
Legal Action Taken
The lorry driver involved in the accident was promptly arrested to assist in the investigations. The case is being looked into under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries severe penalties for offenders.
Past Incidents
Sadly, this was not the first fatal accident involving foreign nationals on the same stretch of road in Semporna. In November last year, a tourist from China lost their life in a collision between a tour bus and a lorry. These incidents highlight the urgent need for improved road safety measures in the region.
As the authorities in Sabah work towards enhancing road safety, the community mourns the loss of lives and hopes for a safer future for all road users in the region.
