Dayton Man Indicted for Fatal Shooting of 15-Year-Old Girl in Harrison Township

In a tragic incident that shook the community of Dayton, Ohio, Tommy Lee Moreland, a 29-year-old man from Dayton, has been indicted on nine counts in connection to the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old female on November 17, 2023, in Harrison Township.

The Indictment

The Montgomery County Grand Jury has charged Moreland with two counts of Murder, three counts of Felonious Assault, one count of Discharge of a Firearm On or Near Prohibited Premise, one count of Improper Handling of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle, and two counts of Tampering with Evidence.

The Incident

On the fateful day of November 17, 2023, sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a shooting in the area of Turner Road and Philadelphia Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered that the victim, 15-year-old Heaven Washington, had been transported to Miami Valley Hospital in a private vehicle. Tragically, Washington succumbed to her injuries and passed away from multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigations revealed that Washington was in the temporary custody of Montgomery County Children’s Services and was being driven back to a group home by a staff member named Baretta Byrdsong. As they were returning to the group home, Moreland’s rented vehicle pulled up alongside them and fired multiple shots into their vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of Washington.

Legal Proceedings

Currently, Moreland is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $1,000,000 cash bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday, March 14, 2024, at 8:30 a.m.

This shocking incident has left the community in mourning and seeking justice for the senseless loss of a young life. As the legal proceedings unfold, the hope for closure and accountability remains paramount for all those affected by this tragedy.
