The Tragic Explosion in Crescent Township

An 89-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman lost their lives in a devastating explosion that rocked Crescent Township, just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The victims, David Mitchell Jr. and Helen Mitchell, were identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Devastation Strikes

The explosion, reported at 8:54 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, completely leveled the home of the elderly couple. The fire raged throughout the house’s foundation and along the surrounding hillside, leaving behind a scene of utter destruction.

Witness Accounts

John Bundy, who works at a nearby factory, described the moment of the explosion as feeling like a truck had hit their building. He and his nephew rushed to the scene and were among the first to witness the aftermath.

Bundy recounted how they encountered a woman holding a baby, who revealed that her parents were the ones who lived in the now-destroyed house. The devastation was palpable, and the urgency to help those affected was immediate.

Response and Recovery

Fire Chief Andrew Tomer described the scene as one of complete devastation, with not a trace of the house left standing. At least two other homes in the vicinity also suffered damage from the explosion.

Investigation Ongoing

The cause of the explosion remains unknown, with officials noting the presence of natural gas and propane from private wells on the site. An investigation is underway to determine what led to the tragic incident that claimed the lives of two beloved community members.
