Tragic Accident in Spring Valley Lake Leaves One Dead

An unfortunate incident occurred in Spring Valley Lake, where a man lost his life after being struck by a car driven by an Apple Valley woman suspected of driving under the influence. The victim, Nicholas Antoni Slate, aged 39 and a resident of Victorville, was walking along Kalin Ranch Drive when the collision took place in the early hours of Sunday.

Details of the Collision

According to California Highway Patrol officers and San Bernardino County coroner’s officials, the fatal collision occurred just after 1 a.m. along Kalin Ranch Drive, west of Golf Course Drive. The victim was walking on the north side of the road when he was hit by a 2015 Chrysler driven by 65-year-old Cynthia Franklin. The car was partially on the roadway and partly on adjacent private properties at the time of the accident.

Driver Arrested on Suspicion of DUI

Following the collision, the driver continued in a westerly direction within the private properties of Kalin Ranch Drive and collided into a concrete wall. The driver sustained moderate injuries, while the pedestrian, Nicholas Antoni Slate, tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Cynthia Franklin was treated for her injuries at a hospital and later arrested on suspicion of DUI causing death.

CHP Takes DUI Seriously

Officer Julian Griggs of the CHP’s Victorville Station emphasised the seriousness with which they approach DUI cases. Griggs stated that the officers are fully aware of the damage and destruction caused by DUI drivers in communities. In response to the incident, a specialised DUI task force will soon be saturating the area with patrols to identify and apprehend intoxicated drivers.

In the wake of this tragic incident, a DUI checkpoint is being planned for the Spring Valley Lake community, along with increased patrols to ensure the safety of residents.
