The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has recently disclosed that the unfortunate demise of an East Falls Church married couple in Arlington was the result of a murder-suicide. The distressing incident unfolded when Arlington County Police responded to a distress call at a residence in the 2400 block of N. Powhatan Street on Dec. 7, 2023.

Upon arrival, authorities discovered the lifeless bodies of Maria Theista Macknight and Gregory Cunningham, both aged 72. The couple exhibited unmistakable signs of deliberate carbon monoxide poisoning, leading to their tragic deaths.

Medical Examiner’s Findings

Following a thorough investigation, the medical examiner determined that Maria Macknight’s death was a homicide caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. In contrast, Gregory Cunningham’s demise was classified as a suicide, with the same cause of death – carbon monoxide poisoning.
