An East Falls Church woman, Maria T. MacKnight, tragically lost her life in a murder-suicide incident that shook the Arlington County community. The incident, which took place in early December, involved Maria and her husband, Gregory Cunningham, both aged 72, succumbing to intentional carbon monoxide poisoning at their residence on N. Powhatan Street.

Maria was known for her work as an acupuncturist, as mentioned on her personal website. The heartbreaking news was officially confirmed by the Arlington County police, stating that the deaths of Maria and Gregory were a result of a murder-suicide.

This devastating tragedy comes in the wake of another murder-suicide in Pentagon City earlier this year, highlighting the concerning trend of such incidents in the region.

The subsequent investigation by the Department’s Homicide/Robbery Unit revealed that Maria’s death was ruled a homicide, while Gregory’s death was determined to be a suicide, both attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. The couple, who were married, were well-respected members of the Arlington community.
