Arrest Made in Alleged Assault of Child at Middletown Daycare
A shocking incident took place at the Town & Country Early Learning Center in Middletown, Connecticut, where a daycare teacher has been arrested after reportedly assaulting a 2-year-old child. The Middletown Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit received a complaint on Jan. 12, 2024, regarding the incident that occurred at the facility located at 195 South Main St.
Incident Details
According to police reports, the facility notified the complainants about the alleged assault and allowed them to view an internal surveillance video capturing the incident. The complainants, upon witnessing the footage, immediately reported the incident to the authorities. The teacher involved in the incident was identified as 47-year-old Kristie Kovarcik of Haddam.
Surveillance Footage
During the investigation, detectives obtained surveillance video footage that allegedly showed Kovarcik picking up the 2-year-old child and tossing the child to the side, causing the child’s head to hit a nearby wall, resulting in a cut above their right eye. The facility director, upon hearing a commotion, reviewed the surveillance camera footage of Kovarcik’s room and witnessed the incident firsthand.
Arrest and Charges
Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Kovarcik, charging her with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree reckless endangerment. Kovarcik turned herself in to the police on Feb. 26, 2024, and was processed before being released on a written promise to appear in court for her scheduled hearing.
Consequences
Town & Country Early Learning Center took swift action in response to the incident, terminating Kovarcik from her position at the facility. The director of the center also reported the incident to the parents of the child involved and the Connecticut Department of Children and Families for further investigation.
