Man Pleads Guilty to 2019 Shooting Death of Corey Robinson in Kansas City

In a recent court appearance, 34-year-old Jonathan D. Campbell from Kansas City, Missouri, admitted his involvement in the July 2019 fatal shooting of Corey Robinson. Campbell entered a guilty plea for voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action, leading to an 11-year prison sentence.

Details of the Crime

The tragic incident unfolded on July 9, 2019, when Kansas City police responded to a call at E. 57th Street and McGee Street around 12:15 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered an unresponsive man in Brookside Park, later identified as Corey Robinson. Sadly, Robinson had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Surveillance footage captured Robinson and at least two others inside a vehicle belonging to Campbell’s girlfriend near the park at the time of the shooting. The vehicle was observed leaving the area hastily following the incident, raising suspicions.

Legal Proceedings and Evidence

During the investigation, detectives recovered vital pieces of evidence at the crime scene, including two live shotgun rounds. Campbell’s criminal history also came to light, with prior involvement in a separate homicide case on December 3, 2019, where witnesses identified him as the perpetrator.

Further incriminating evidence emerged when police obtained a DNA sample from Campbell through a warrant. The DNA was compared to samples found on the shotgun shells at the park, leading to a conclusive match. This critical forensic link solidified Campbell’s connection to the crime.

Past Criminal Record

Records reveal that Campbell has a history of violence, having been arrested in 2008 and subsequently sentenced to 12 years for charges including kidnapping, armed criminal action, and robbery. After serving his sentence, Campbell was released on February 23, 2019, only to become embroiled in the tragic events of July 2019.

The guilty plea and sentencing mark a significant step towards justice for Corey Robinson and his loved ones, bringing closure to a harrowing chapter in Kansas City’s history.
