Tragic Incident at Mahashivratri Procession in Kota

A devastating incident occurred during a Mahashivratri procession in Kota, Rajasthan, where a child was electrocuted and succumbed to severe burn injuries. The tragic event took place in the Sakatpura area, where a group of people, including 18 children and two adults, were participating in a ‘Shiv Barat’ procession to celebrate the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri.

Details of the Incident

During the procession, a young boy holding a 22-feet iron flagpole accidentally came in contact with a high-tension power line passing overhead. This contact resulted in the electrocution of around 20 individuals, including the boy and four other children who sustained critical injuries. The injured were immediately rushed to Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Hospital for emergency treatment after initial care at Kota’s MBS Hospital.

Tragic Loss and Government Assistance

Tragically, one of the critically injured children, identified as Shugan (13), could not survive his 92 per cent burn injuries and passed away in the early hours of Sunday at SMS Hospital in Jaipur. In response to the heartbreaking incident, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the deceased child’s family and Rs 1 lakh each for the seriously injured children from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. Additionally, Rs 50,000 would be provided to the injured children undergoing treatment in Kota.

Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation

Following the tragic loss of Shugan, the police have added relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Juvenile Justice Act against the organisers of the procession. Initial charges were filed against the organisers – Badrilal, Babulal, and Gopal – under IPC sections 308, 338, and 34. Subsequently, additional sections, including IPC 304 (A) and 336, along with Section 75 (cruelty to child) of the Juvenile Justice Act, were included in the FIR after the first fatality in the incident.

Health Minister’s Visit and Medical Care

In response to the tragic incident, State Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khinvsar visited the injured children at SMS Hospital in Jaipur to inquire about their well-being and ensure they receive the necessary medical care. The minister instructed the hospital management to provide all possible assistance to the children and directed senior plastic surgeons to oversee their treatment without any deficiencies.

This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures during public events and the need for strict adherence to regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.
