Search Operation Finds Bodies After Longboat Capsizes in Kapit

In a tragic incident, a longboat capsized in Sungai Batang Baleh in Kapit on Thursday, leading to a search operation for four missing victims. The search operation took a devastating turn when three bodies were found on Saturday, adding a new layer of tragedy to the already heartbreaking situation.

Discovery of Bodies

Kapit Fire and Rescue station chief, Timothy Barat, reported that the bodies of two victims were found more than 100km away from where the boat capsized. The victims were identified as Sjn Jonathan Lambert, 51, and Jack Balan, 45. Sjn Jonathan’s body was found floating near the Kapit express boat terminal, while Jack Balan was discovered in the waters of Pulau Kerto, Sibu, a significant distance from the incident location.

Identification Process

The identification process was a harrowing task for the authorities and the families of the victims. Sjn Jonathan’s body was found with his pistol, aiding in the identification process. Jack Balan was identified by his wife before being sent to Sibu Hospital for further action. The third body, discovered near Bintangor, drifted away but was eventually found in Batang Lebaan by a marine police team.

Ongoing Search Operations

Despite the recovery of three bodies, the search operation continues as one victim is still missing. The search operations were temporarily suspended on Saturday evening, with hopes of finding the remaining victim in the coming days. The boat capsizing incident involved five individuals, including two police personnel from the Kapit district police headquarters.

The community is reeling from the tragic events that unfolded in Kapit, and the search operation remains a top priority for the authorities. The families of the victims are in mourning, and the entire region is coming together to support them during this difficult time.
