Man Charged with DUI After Driving Wrong Way in East Hartford

An East Hartford resident found himself in hot water after being charged with a DUI following a dangerous incident early Sunday morning. The man, identified as 69-year-old John Washam, was arrested after driving the wrong way and striking a police cruiser in East Hartford, Connecticut.

State Police Respond to Wrong Way Driver

State police were alerted to a report of a wrong-way driver on Route 2 at approximately 3:50 a.m. The driver was spotted traveling in East Hartford, heading westbound in the eastbound lanes. As troopers rushed to the scene, the driver entered Route 5/15 and continued southbound in the northbound lanes.

Suspect’s Vehicle Found on Wrong Side of the Road

Troopers quickly located the suspect’s vehicle driving the wrong way in the right shoulder. In an attempt to stop the driver, the vehicle ended up colliding with a State Police cruiser.

Arrest and Charges

Upon apprehension, John Washam displayed signs of intoxication and was uncooperative with the authorities. He was promptly taken into custody and subjected to a sobriety test, which he failed. Washam now faces a slew of charges including reckless driving, disobeying an officer’s signal, and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Court Appearance and Bail

After being held on a $75,000 bond, John Washam is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Monday to face the consequences of his actions.
