The Tragic Incident

On a fateful Friday afternoon on March 8, a heartbreaking incident took place as a UH-72 Lakota helicopter was flying over the U.S.-Mexico border near Rio Grande City, Texas. The Joint Task Force North reported that the helicopter crashed, claiming the lives of three individuals.

Remembering the Heroes

Among the victims was National Guard soldier, Casey Frankoski, who hailed from Rensselaer County and was a graduate of Columbia High School in East Greenbush. Mayor Mike Stammel of Rensselaer expressed deep sorrow over the loss, highlighting Casey’s outstanding academic, athletic, and community service achievements. Her family’s dedication to public service, with her father being the retired Rensselaer Police Chief James Frankoski, further emphasized her legacy as an American hero.

The second victim, New York State Police trooper John M. Grassia III, was not only a law enforcement officer but also a member of the National Guard. His commitment to protecting both the citizens of New York State and the entire nation was commendable, as stated by the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association.

A Tragic Loss

Amidst the tragedy, a Border Patrol agent also lost their life in the crash, while another soldier sustained injuries.
