The tragic incident took place on Friday, March 8, at approximately 2:50 p.m. near the US-Mexico border in Rio Grande City, Texas. A UH-72 Lakota chopper carrying National Guard soldiers crashed, resulting in the loss of three lives.

Victims Identified

Among the victims was National Guard soldier Casey Frankoski, a proud graduate of Columbia High School in East Greenbush. Hailing from a family with a strong background in public service, Casey was described by Rensselaer Mayor Mike Stammel as an outstanding student who excelled in sports and community service before joining the New York National Guard.

Casey’s father, retired Rensselaer Police Chief James Frankoski, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of his daughter in the tragic accident. Another victim identified was New York State Police trooper John M. Grassia III, who had recently joined the force in April 2022 and was serving in Troop G (Latham) in Albany County.

Trooper Grassia, known for his dedication to serving and protecting the citizens of New York State and the entire United States, will be remembered for his ultimate sacrifice. The New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association paid tribute to his service and commitment to duty.

The incident is still under investigation, with details such as Casey Frankoski’s age yet to be released. The crash also claimed the life of a Border Patrol agent, with one soldier sustaining injuries. The Joint Task Force North is leading the investigation into the tragic event.
