Details of the Incident

On the afternoon of 03-08-2024, Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) Deputies received a distress call about a potential plane crash in the remote area of Usal Road in Whitethorn, CA.

Deputies, along with emergency response teams from Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol, CalFire, Southern Humboldt Tech Rescue, and local fire departments, rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that a 38-year-old male, a 38-year-old female, and a 2-year-old female from Santa Rosa, CA, were the occupants of the aircraft. Thankfully, they only sustained minor injuries in the crash.

Heroic Actions

Investigations revealed that the plane’s engine malfunctioned shortly after takeoff, forcing the pilot to act quickly. Realizing that the plane was rapidly losing altitude, the pilot made a split-second decision to deploy the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS).

The parachute system successfully slowed the descent of the aircraft, allowing it to land in a wooded area off Yellow Road in Whitethorn, CA. Despite the crash, the occupants miraculously escaped with only minor cuts and scratches.

Response and Investigation

Following the incident, Sheriff’s Deputies activated Aircraft Accident protocols and contacted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) to conduct a thorough investigation.

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to all the agencies and departments that responded swiftly to the emergency, highlighting the collaborative effort that ensured the safety of the individuals involved.

As the investigation continues, the community remains grateful for the quick thinking and actions that led to the survival of the Santa Rosa family in this harrowing aviation incident.
