Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Tragic Incident in Owasso, Oklahoma

Recently, the Rainbow Youth Project USA, a national organization dedicated to LGBTQ youth suicide prevention, has reported a significant increase in crisis calls from Oklahoma following the death of 16-year-old Nex Benedict. Nex, who identified as nonbinary, tragically passed away on February 8, just one day after disclosing to their family about being involved in a restroom altercation at Owasso High School in Owasso, Oklahoma.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Nex’s death, with uncertainty about whether the altercation played a role. The US Department of Education has also launched a probe into the school district’s handling of alleged harassment incidents.

Rising Call Volume

In response to the surge in crisis calls, the Rainbow Youth Project USA has seen a 238% increase in the number of calls from Oklahoma, with an average of 325 calls per month. Following Nex’s passing, this number spiked to 1,097 calls in just two weeks, prompting the organization to establish a rapid response team in Oklahoma to manage the influx of calls.

Impact on LGBTQ Community

The tragic incident and subsequent rise in calls to the Rainbow Youth Project shed light on the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in Oklahoma. Recent legislative actions, such as the implementation of a “bathroom bill” and an executive order regarding gender identity, have heightened fears among LGBTQ youth.

Community Support

Kris Williams from the Diversity Center of Oklahoma highlighted the heightened fear among LGBTQ youth following Nex’s death, citing concerns about rejection and homelessness. Despite these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope as some parents are showing support for their LGBTQ children.

Call for Unity

Both Williams and Lance Preston, the founder of the Rainbow Youth Project, advocate for a shift away from divisive political rhetoric towards a more supportive and inclusive approach. They emphasize the need for unity and understanding within communities to provide a safe and accepting environment for LGBTQ individuals.
