In a tragic turn of events, a woman lost her life in a recent incident of elephant-human conflict in Odisha. The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday night in Ushumundi village, located under Sundargarh’s Koida Forest Range. The victim, identified as Ituwari Bhadra, was fatally trampled by a wild elephant that had entered the village in search of food.

Details of the Incident

Reports suggest that the woman was asleep in her home when the wild tusker ventured into her house in search of paddy grains. Upon sensing danger, Bhadra attempted to flee but was pursued and ultimately trampled to death by the elephant. Following the tragic event, a team from the forest department arrived at the scene and arranged for the body to be taken for post-mortem examination. The grieving villagers are calling for adequate compensation to be provided to the deceased’s family.

Previous Incidents of Elephant Attacks

This recent incident adds to a series of unfortunate events involving wild elephants in the region. On February 11th of this year, a 72-year-old man met a similar fate when an elephant stormed into his home in Khaerpada village under Sambalpur Sadar Forest Range and trampled him to death. The elderly man was asleep at the time of the attack and succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

In another incident in the same month, a herd of 12 elephants, including two tuskers, wreaked havoc in Dharakote, Shergarh, and Sadangipalli areas under the Aska range of South Ghumusar forest division in Ganjam district. The wild animals caused destruction by pulling down villagers’ houses and consuming harvested paddy. Additionally, a cyclist in Sadangipalli village fell victim to an elephant attack and suffered severe injuries.

These alarming incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing conflict between humans and wildlife in Odisha, highlighting the need for measures to mitigate such encounters and protect both communities and animals.
