Shocking Incident in Ashtabula, Ohio

In a bizarre turn of events, two women from Ashtabula, Ohio, have been accused of driving the body of an 80-year-old man to a bank to withdraw money from his account before dropping his body off at a hospital. The women, Karen Casbohm, 63, and Loreen Bea Feralo, 55, now face charges of gross abuse of a corpse and theft from a person in a protected class.

Discovery at Ashtabula County Medical Center

The shocking incident came to light when police were called to the Ashtabula County Medical Center emergency room, where the body of the deceased man, Douglas Layman, was dropped off anonymously. It was only after one of the women contacted the hospital with information on the deceased that Layman was identified as the victim.

Details of the Investigation

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Casbohm and Feralo, along with a third unnamed person, had found Layman deceased at the residence where they all lived together. They then proceeded to place Layman in the front seat of his car and drove to a bank to withdraw money from his account. The body was positioned in such a way that it would be visible to bank staff during the withdrawal.

Motives Behind the Actions

According to Lt. Mike Palinkas, one of the women had been in a live-in relationship with Layman for several years, while the other had been staying at the residence for a few months. The women claimed that it was normal for them to access Layman’s account, but no clear motive was provided for their actions on that particular day.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

Following the incident, Casbohm was arraigned and held on a $5,000 bond, while Feralo is scheduled for arraignment next week. It remains unclear whether they have legal representation at this time. The police have stated that the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be brought against the women. The coroner’s office is also conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of Layman’s death, a process that could take up to eight months.
