Six Sri Lankan nationals tragically lost their lives in a horrific incident in Ottawa, Canada. The victims, including young children and a two-and-a-half-month-old baby girl, were fatally stabbed by a 19-year-old student from Sri Lanka named Febrio De-Zoysa. Ottawa police chief Eric Stubbs revealed that the suspect used an “edged weapon” in his attack, leading to six counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.

Mass killings are a rare occurrence in the peaceful country of Canada, making this tragedy even more shocking. Among the deceased were a 35-year-old mother, a 7-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, a 2-year-old daughter, the infant girl, and a 40-year-old family acquaintance.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police found the father of the family outside, desperately calling for help. He was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive. Police received emergency calls at 10:52 p.m. on the fateful night.

Ottawa’s Sri Lankan high commission has been in contact with relatives in Colombo to provide support and assistance during this difficult time. De-Zoysa appeared in court, where he was instructed not to communicate with the surviving father or other witnesses. His case has been adjourned until March 13 to allow time for legal representation.

Authorities swiftly apprehended the suspect, reassuring the public that there is no ongoing threat to safety. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed shock and horror at the senseless violence, while Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe described the incident as devastating and heartbreaking for the entire city.
