Multiple Arrests Made in Connection with Murder of Elderly Woman in Santa Barbara County

Authorities in Santa Barbara County have recently made significant progress in the investigation into the brutal murder of an elderly woman during a home invasion in 2022. The case has revealed shocking details of a murder-for-hire plot orchestrated by a woman with a history of targeting the victim for financial crimes.

A Vibrant Community Member

The victim, Violet Evelyn Alberts, a 96-year-old widow, was found smothered to death inside her Montecito home on May 27, 2022. Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown described her as a cherished member of the community known for her warm demeanor and outgoing personality. Despite facing challenges with her memory and cognition, Alberts remained undaunted and relied on her close-knit community for support.

A Disturbing Past

Alberts had previously been the target of financial fraud by a Los Angeles County real estate developer, Pauline Macareno. Macareno, based in Porter Ranch, had convinced Alberts to transfer the title of her $5 million home to herself through a real estate scheme. Macareno was later arrested and convicted of elder fraud in connection with these crimes.

The Murder-for-Hire Scheme

Authorities revealed that Macareno was the mastermind behind a twisted plot to exploit Alberts financially and ultimately accelerate her death. This led to at least two men breaking into Alberts’ home and ending her life in a premeditated murder-for-hire scheme. Evidence suggests that the property was being surveyed in the days leading up to the killing, highlighting the calculated nature of the crime.

The Arrests

Three individuals, Henry Rostomyan, Ricardo Martin Del Campo, and Harry Basmadjian, have been identified as participants in Alberts’ murder. Rostomyan and Martin Del Campo have been specifically named as the suspected killers and face charges of murder. Basmadjian, who was already in federal custody on unrelated charges, suffered a life-threatening medical emergency following his arrest.

Seeking Justice

Sheriff Brown commended the efforts of his detectives and partner agencies in solving this complex case, emphasizing that justice will be served for the victim and her community. He also issued a stern warning to those considering committing crimes in Santa Barbara County, stating that perpetrators will be identified, hunted down, and brought to justice.

Investigators are still seeking tips related to the murder of Violet Alberts. Anyone with information is urged to contact Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s detectives at 805-681-4150 or provide anonymous tips online.
