Tragic Murder of Pinole Mother and College Student

PINOLE, Calif. – The close-knit community of Pinole, California, is reeling from the devastating news of the senseless murder of Brittany Ligdis, a beloved mother and college student. The 30-year-old was tragically shot and killed in her basement apartment on Summit Drive on the morning of Feb. 16.

Ligdis, described as a vibrant and caring individual, leaves behind a grieving family and circle of friends who are struggling to come to terms with the shocking loss. Her aunt, Nancy O’Neil, fondly remembers Ligdis’s infectious smile that could light up any room.

A Tragic Turn of Events

The heartbreaking incident unfolded when Ligdis’s ex-boyfriend and father of her young son, Jeffrey Kendall, broke into her home. Ligdis, in a desperate attempt to protect her 4-year-old son Liam, sought refuge in the laundry room. Tragically, Kendall fatally shot Ligdis in front of her helpless child.

Neighbours were left in shock as Kendall was captured on a doorbell camera fleeing the scene moments after the shooting. The California Highway Patrol later apprehended Kendall in Santa Cruz, where he was arrested on suspicion of homicide, possession of an assault weapon, and child endangerment.

A Promising Future Cut Short

Ligdis was a dedicated student studying nursing at Diablo Valley College. She was known for her passion for nursing and willingness to help her peers succeed in their studies. Her close friend, Kassandra Santiago, spoke of Ligdis’s aspirations to graduate alongside her and embark on a career dedicated to caring for others.

Santiago also revealed Ligdis’s concerns about Kendall’s erratic behaviour and recent acquisition of a firearm. Ligdis had confided in her friend about the challenges she faced in their relationship, highlighting Kendall’s unpredictable nature and struggles with anxiety.

Domestic Violence Epidemic

Law enforcement officials have classified Ligdis’s tragic murder as a case of domestic violence, shedding light on the prevalence of such incidents in our communities. Kendall’s history of mental illness and drug use, coupled with no prior record of abuse or violence, serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers that can lurk behind closed doors.

As the investigation continues and justice is sought for Ligdis and her family, the community remains united in mourning the loss of a bright young woman whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
