Man in Tolland County Faces Mental Health Crisis
A disturbing incident unfolded in Tolland County, specifically on Meadow Road in Bolton, around 2:15 p.m. on Friday, March 1. Connecticut State Police responded to a report concerning a man in crisis. The individual, later identified as Maxim Nowak, aged 29 and a resident of Bolton, was reportedly experiencing a severe mental health episode.
Family Raises Alarm
According to the Inspector General’s Office report, Nowak’s family alerted authorities that he was making threats of self-harm and harm to others. They described him as waving a knife, causing immediate concern for his safety and that of those around him.
Police Intervention
Trooper Wendy Garcia-Campos, Trooper Doug Bernier, and Trooper Brian Contenta were promptly dispatched to the scene by the State Police. Upon encountering Nowak in the main hallway of the residence, they found him armed with two knives. Despite their repeated efforts to persuade him to drop the weapons, Nowak refused to comply.
Use of Force
As the situation escalated and Nowak raised one of the knives, Trooper Bernier deployed his taser while Trooper Contenta discharged his firearm multiple times, ultimately striking Nowak. Following the altercation, State troopers and EMS provided immediate medical attention to Nowak before transporting him to Hartford Hospital, where he remains under treatment.
Body Camera Footage
During the encounter, Trooper Contenta’s actions were captured by a body-worn camera, the footage of which is currently under review as part of the ongoing investigation by the Inspector General’s Office. For a glimpse into the incident, a portion of the recording can be accessed here.
