The Heartbreaking Loss of a Cairns Father

A devastating tragedy has struck the community of Cairns, as a beloved father of two, Evan Brown, has passed away just three weeks after being diagnosed with a lethal tropical bacterial infection. The incident occurred following the floods in December, highlighting the dangers that can arise from such natural disasters.

The Battle with Melioidosis

Evan Brown, a 40-year-old sales assistant, bravely fought against the infection known as melioidosis after being admitted to the hospital on February 13. Despite receiving treatment at Gold Coast University Hospital, Mr Brown tragically succumbed to the illness on March 4, surrounded by his loved ones.

Understanding Melioidosis

Melioidosis is a severe bacterial infection that is commonly found in groundwater and soil, particularly after periods of heavy rainfall. The disease can be contracted when skin abrasions or wounds come into contact with contaminated water or soil. Symptoms of melioidosis include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, often requiring hospitalization for antibiotic treatment.

Support for the Family

In the wake of Evan Brown’s passing, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support his grieving family. The fundraiser aims to alleviate the financial burden on Mr Brown’s wife, Sarah, and their two children, Connor and Mia. The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming, with donations pouring in to help the family during this difficult time.

As the Cairns community mourns the loss of Evan Brown, it serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking medical help for any lingering symptoms. By raising awareness about melioidosis and the potential risks associated with it, we can honour Evan’s memory and prevent future tragedies from occurring..
