The Incident in Bolton

Last Friday, the tranquil town of Bolton, Connecticut, was rocked by a tragic incident involving an officer-involved shooting. The Connecticut State Police received a distressing call about a man named Maxim Nowak in the midst of a mental health crisis at a residence on Meadow Road.

Man in Crisis

The 29-year-old Nowak was reportedly making threats to harm himself and others while brandishing two knives. This alarming situation prompted Troopers Wendy Garcia-Campos, Doug Bernier, and Brian Contenta from Troop K to respond to the scene.

Tense Standoff

Upon arrival, the troopers found Nowak in the main hallway of the residence, still clutching the knives. Despite their best efforts to de-escalate the situation and convince Nowak to drop the weapons, he remained uncooperative.

Desperate Pleas

On the bodycam footage, Contenta can be heard pleading with Nowak to drop the knives, referring to him as “Maxwell” in an attempt to establish a rapport. Nowak’s father also makes a heartbreaking plea for his son to cooperate.

Tragic Turn of Events

As tensions mounted, Nowak became increasingly agitated, demanding that the troopers put down their Tasers. In a split-second decision, Bernier deployed his Taser while Contenta fired his weapon, resulting in Nowak being struck multiple times.

Medical Attention

Following the altercation, troopers and EMS personnel provided immediate medical care to Nowak on the scene before transporting him to Hartford Hospital. His current condition remains unknown as the investigation into the incident continues.

Ongoing Investigation

The Office of the Inspector General, in collaboration with the Connecticut State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad and the Tolland Judicial District State’s Attorney’s Office, is diligently working to uncover the full details surrounding this tragic event in Bolton.
