Attempted Carjacking Incident at Mount Prospect Gas Station
Mount Prospect police have charged a man with attempted carjacking after a disturbing incident took place at a 7-Eleven gas station located at 1201 E. Central Road. The incident occurred on Nov. 6, 2023, when a masked individual entered a Mercedes-Benz SUV while the owner was pumping gas.
Details of the Incident
Upon the arrival of Mount Prospect police officers, it was discovered that the masked man had gained access to the vehicle through the unlocked driver’s door without the owner’s knowledge. The man then confronted the owner before fleeing to another vehicle, a blue Audi SUV, which left the station before law enforcement arrived.
Suspect Identified
Authorities were able to identify the suspect as Marco C. Smith from Chicago after his fingerprints were found in the Mercedes-Benz and submitted to a crime lab. An arrest warrant was issued for Smith on Feb. 20, and he was taken into custody by Chicago police on Feb. 23.
Charges Pressed
Smith has been charged with one felony count of attempted possession of a motor vehicle, one felony count of burglary, and one misdemeanor count of criminal trespass to a vehicle. His next court appearance is scheduled for March 21.
