Brookings Man Identified as Victim of Fatal Crash into Big Sioux River

A tragic incident occurred over the weekend when a Brookings man lost his life in a single-vehicle crash into the Big Sioux River. The victim has been identified as Lee Clark, a 56-year-old resident of Brookings, South Dakota.

Details of the Crash

The fatal crash took place on Friday, March 1, around 4 p.m. The incident occurred on a stretch of Interstate 29 in Moody County, approximately seven miles south of Brookings, where the Big Sioux River runs under the highway.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Clark was driving a 2020 Ford Expedition northbound on Interstate 29 when, for reasons unknown, the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the Big Sioux River. Unfortunately, Clark was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Law enforcement and bystanders at the scene managed to pull Clark out of the vehicle and onto a sandbar. Despite their efforts, first responders pronounced him dead at the scene.

Investigation Ongoing

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. Details about what led to the vehicle leaving the roadway and plunging into the river are still being determined.
