The Lake County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, released the identity of a crash victim involved in a head-on crash with fire on County Line Road near Bellwood Drive in Barrington Hills that occurred on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
An autopsy was conducted at the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Thursday, February 29, 2024, but the victim’s identity was not initially positively identified. Then, this morning, Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the deceased was positively identified as 30-year-old Josue Campuzano-Cuin, of Carpentersville. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that Mr. Campuzano-Cuin died from injuries suffered from the vehicle fire which was a result of the crash.
The Barrington Hills Police Department and Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District responded on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at approximately 8:51 p.m., to the area of County Line Road and Bellwood Drive in Barrington Hills for a vehicle crash with injuries, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office. Officers arrived on the scene and found a two-vehicle crash with a fire that spread to the passenger compartment of one of the vehicles. The driver of a white pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver of the second vehicle — a Hyundai SUV — was rescued by a Good Samaritan and was transported by Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District paramedics to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Based on the seriousness of the crash, the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) of Lake County was assigned to conduct the crash investigation. Following the on-scene crash investigation, the investigation continues within the Barrington Hills Police Department and MCAT.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the scene.
A witness reported that a man helped the female driver of a Hyundai SUV escape her vehicle while her vehicle was adjacent to the burning pickup truck.

INITIAL REPORT/LAST WEEK
Police officers west of Barrington Hills were on the lookout for a reckless driver and/or possibly impaired driver that was driving in a location west of Barrington Hills minutes before the fatal head-on crash was reported in Barrington Hills on County Line Road, according to an off-duty police officer from a nearby police agency, who was aware of a police dispatch Wednesday night. Police officers were searching for the driver of a white work truck that was reported driving at high speed in the area.
A short time later a crash occurred which caused large flames and black smoke to rise from the scene of a head-on crash on County Line Road near Bellwood Drive and west of Donlea Road.
Initially, there was no confirmation from officials that the fatal crash and the reckless driving report were connected.
The initial report Wednesday night indicated that police from Barrington Hills and firefighters and paramedics from Barrington-Countryside Fire Protection District responded about 8:55 p.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2024, to a report of a head-on crash with a person possibly trapped in a vehicle with a vehicle also on fire on County Line Road west of Donlea Road in Barrington Hills.
Police, firefighters, and paramedics discovered two severely damaged vehicles close to each other. A white pickup truck was discovered with a well-involved fire in the engine compartment that extended into the driver’s front seat.
The vehicle fire was extinguished quickly by Barrington-Countryside firefighters, but the driver of a white Ford pickup truck was pronounced deceased at the scene. Initially, the identity of the driver of the pickup truck was not released.
A female driver in a black or dark-colored 2022 Hyundai Palisade SUV was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in North Barrington and was listed in serious condition.
According to police, the driver of a white 2006 Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling eastbound on County Line Road before the crash occurred.
Tragic Collision on County Line Road Leaves Families Devastated
In a heartbreaking turn of events, a fatal crash occurred on County Line Road, also known as Lake Cook Road, leaving families of the victims distraught and devastated. The incident took place as the driver of a Hyundai was traveling westbound on County Line Road when the collision with another vehicle occurred.
Witnesses at the scene reported that family members of at least one of the crash victims arrived at the scene, only to be met with the devastating reality of the situation. The emotional toll on the families was evident as they grappled with the severity of the crash.
Road Closures and Investigation
Following the crash, County Line Road was closed between Donlea Road and Ridge Road for an extended period to facilitate on-scene investigation. Additionally, County Line Road was closed at Steeplechase Road West, with eastbound traffic diverted southbound on Old Sutton Road.
A MABAS Division 4 Box Alarm was activated for fire investigators, with an investigation unit from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal joining forces with Barrington Hills and Lake County MCAT investigators at the scene.
On-Scene Response
Barrington Hills and Lake County MCAT investigators worked tirelessly at the scene, with the bulk of the investigation wrapping up around midnight. However, County Line Road remained closed until about 3:00 a.m. for additional investigation work and cleanup.
Hanover Township Emergency Services crews provided scene lighting and traffic control support, while Lake Zurich police were on site as part of a mutual aid response. Firefighters and paramedics from Barrington, Cary, Fox River Grove, and Lake Zurich were also on hand to respond to the crash.
Road Conditions and Safety Measures
County Line Road, a 2-lane rural highway with narrow shoulders, heavy brush, trees, and residential properties, has a speed limit of 50 MPH. There is a No-Passing Zone for eastbound traffic west of the intersection with Donlea Road, with a double yellow line in place beyond that point.
Despite the challenging road conditions, there are no traffic crossover warning Rumble Strips near the crash scene, raising concerns about safety measures in place.
