The Cyprus Police reported the loss of a young migrant child, aged 6, whose death led to the father making the harrowing decision to lay his body to rest in the sea amidst a perilous journey from Syria.

**Distress at Sea**

On February 29th, the radar systems operated by the Port and Marine Police detected a vessel 58 nautical miles off Larnaca’s coastline. The boat, carrying 36 irregular migrants, was found adrift in challenging weather conditions. Cyprus’s Police Spokesperson, Christos Andreou, detailed the rescue operation that successfully brought the migrants to safety. However, it was during the subsequent processing that the heartrending story came to light. Documents revealed a missing child from one family, prompting an investigation.

**A Desperate Decision**

The father recounted their grim voyage that began on February 20th from Syria, describing how they ran out of food and fuel, leaving them stranded at sea. Tragically, two days before their rescue, one of his children succumbed to the harsh conditions, leading to a decision no parent should ever have to make. The deceased child was cast into the sea, a stark reminder of the perilous journeys many undertake in search of a better life. Additionally, three other individuals attempted to leave the boat on makeshift rafts, their fates currently unknown despite search and rescue efforts.

**Legal and Humanitarian Aftermath**

Following the rescue, two migrants were hospitalized, one in critical condition. The entire group was moved to the Pournara First Reception Center for further assistance. Amid these events, a 22-year-old man, identified as the boat’s captain, was arrested under multiple charges, including manslaughter and negligent homicide. This arrest sheds light on the dangerous crossings facilitated by human smugglers, preying on the vulnerable in their most desperate hours. The Larnaca District Court has since issued a detention order for the young captain as investigations continue.

This tragic tale underlines the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
