Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Tragic Incident in Kerala’s Idukki District

A 70-year-old woman tragically lost her life on Monday in a horrifying incident involving a wild elephant in Adimali, located in Kerala’s Idukki district. This devastating event marks the fifth such death this year in the area, which has been grappling with a series of elephant attacks in recent months.

Victim Identified as Indira Ramakrishnan

The victim, identified as Indira Ramakrishnan, was a resident of Kanjiraveli village in Adimali panchayat. She met with a fatal fate while tending to her sheep on her own farmland when she was unexpectedly trampled by the wild elephant. Despite the efforts of those nearby who rushed her to the hospital, she was sadly pronounced dead.

Protests Erupt in Response to Apathy Allegations

Outrage and anger swept through the community following the incident, leading a group of individuals, including Congress MP Dean Kuriakose and MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan, to stage a protest with the victim’s body. They accused Forest Department officials of negligence in addressing the escalating human-animal conflict in the area, refusing to allow the police to conduct the necessary inquest and demanding the presence of senior forest officials at the scene.

Escalating Human-Animal Conflict

Idukki’s Adimali region, alongside the hilly areas of Ernakulam district, particularly Kothamangalam, has been witnessing a surge in animal attacks, notably from elephants. The alarming trend has claimed the lives of four individuals in Munnar, Idukki’s hill station, in the past two months alone.

Wayanad District Faces Similar Challenges

The issue of human-animal conflict has also reached critical levels in Wayanad district, where three people have fallen victim to elephant attacks this year. Tensions escalated following the death of a forest protection committee member in Pulpally, sparking hours-long protests in the streets.

As the community mourns the loss of yet another life to a tragic elephant attack, the need for proactive measures to address human-animal conflict in Kerala’s hilly regions has never been more urgent.
