Tragic Three-Vehicle Crash Claims Three Lives in Chillicothe

MOSSVILLE, Ill. – The Peoria County Coroner has released more information about a devastating three-vehicle crash that occurred on Saturday afternoon near Chillicothe, claiming the lives of three individuals.

The harrowing incident took place around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and Rt. 29, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to Coroner Jamie Harwood, the preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts revealed that 97-year-old Charles Mundy of Chillicothe was behind the wheel of a van traveling south on Rt. 29. Tragically, Mundy failed to stop at a red light at the intersection, triggering a catastrophic chain reaction crash involving a pickup truck and a midsize SUV both turning onto Rt. 29.

Mundy was rushed to OSF St. Francis Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. The two occupants of the SUV, identified as 72-year-old Victor Snodgrass and his wife, 71-year-old Norma Snodgrass, both from Chillicothe, also tragically lost their lives at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Harwood disclosed that all three victims suffered multiple blunt-force trauma injuries and likely passed away moments after the collision. Toxicology results are currently pending in compliance with Illinois State statute.

Illinois State Police have reported that a fourth individual sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.

The cause of the devastating crash remains under investigation, with the ISP spearheading the ongoing inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic loss of life.
