Report Questions Driver’s Claim in Fatal Arizona Cyclist Crash

A recent report on a tragic crash involving a pickup truck and a group of cyclists near Phoenix, Arizona, has raised doubts about the driver’s initial claim that the vehicle’s steering locked up.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a comprehensive report on the February 25, 2023, incident that occurred on a bridge in Goodyear, Arizona. The crash resulted in the tragic deaths of two bicyclists and left 17 others injured.

Investigation Findings

According to the NTSB report, the truck’s steering functioned properly during a test drive conducted by a technician. Additionally, the Arizona Department of Public Safety conducted their own investigation and found no issues with the steering mechanism.

The driver of the truck, identified as Pedro Quintana-Lujan, was initially arrested on multiple charges including manslaughter, assault, endangerment, and causing serious injury or death by a moving violation. However, following further investigation, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell requested additional inquiries by the Goodyear police.

Legal Proceedings

Subsequent investigations by the police suggested that the incident may have been an accident, leading Mitchell’s office to decide against pursuing felony charges. As of now, it remains uncertain whether the Goodyear City Prosecutor’s Office will pursue any charges against Quintana-Lujan in light of the NTSB findings.

Efforts to reach Quintana-Lujan and the authorities in Goodyear for comment have been unsuccessful, with no responses received to date.

Community Impact

The tragic crash deeply affected the local cycling community, prompting survivors to come together for a commemorative ride in Goodyear. The incident served as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures for cyclists and the need for vigilance on the roads.

Speaking to AZFamily.com, Clay Wells, a survivor of the crash, expressed his emotions about returning to cycling with the group. “It’s been a long time coming, and I hope this ride brings some closure,” he said.

As the investigation continues and legal proceedings unfold, the community remains united in their support for the victims and their families.
