A disturbing incident unfolded in the early hours of Thursday, Feb. 29, at the Whataburger located on 13880 Highway 19 in Thomasville, Georgia. The tranquility of the night was shattered by a shooting incident that took place in the restaurant’s parking lot, involving an individual associated with the Thomas County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) SWAT Team.

Details of the Incident

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) was swiftly called in around 6:00 a.m. to investigate the altercation that occurred at around 4:25 a.m. One of the individuals involved in the incident was identified as Lucas Williams, 38, who served as a medic with the TCSO SWAT Team. It is important to note that Williams was not engaged in any SWAT operations at the time of the incident.

The altercation reportedly began when Williams, who was waiting for someone at Whataburger, engaged in a dispute with a male driver in the drive-thru line. Williams allegedly brandished a pistol and approached the driver’s vehicle. In response, the driver exited his car with a rifle and moved to the rear of the parking lot, eventually fleeing to a nearby business and crossing Highway 19.

As the male crossed the highway, Williams allegedly fired multiple shots from his pistol, though the male did not return fire. Fortunately, no one was injured in the exchange of gunfire. One of the rounds discharged by Williams struck a gas pump at the Raceway gas station, highlighting the potential danger posed by the incident.

Legal Consequences

In the aftermath of the shooting, Lucas Williams was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and subsequently taken into custody at the Thomas County Jail. The swift legal action underscores the seriousness of the incident and the need to uphold public safety.
