On a cold and somber day in Atlanta, Ga., hundreds of mourners gathered at Woodstock City Church for the funeral services of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who tragically lost her life while jogging near Lake Herrick on the campus of the University of Georgia.

A long line formed outside the visitation as mourners came to pay their respects to Riley. Inside the large church’s auditorium, a slideshow of photos played on TV screens, showcasing Riley at the beach, at a football game, and wearing a Bulldogs jersey.
Tears were shed as people passed by the casket, surrounded by photos of Riley and flower bouquets. The family requested a private ceremony with no cameras allowed on church property, with law enforcement officers ensuring privacy.
International Outrage Following Arrest of Suspect
The tragic story of Laken Riley gained international attention after the arrest of Jose Ibarra, who was charged with her murder. Ibarra, a citizen of Venezuela, had illegally crossed the southern border in 2022, according to federal authorities.

In Riley’s hometown of Woodstock, the community came together to mourn her loss, even those who did not personally know her.
Residents expressed their condolences, with Mark Randall stating, “We didn’t know the family or the girl, but we know the story and it really touched us. We really would like the family to know that people are thinking about you.”
