CAMERON, WI (DrydenWire) – A devastating crash took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning, February 28, 2024, on US 8 near CTH M in Barron County, close to the town of Cameron. The collision, which occurred at 12:16 am, involved a semi-tractor-trailer and an SUV.

Assisting Agencies at the Scene

Responding to the scene were multiple agencies, including the Barron County Sheriff’s Office, Rusk County Sheriff’s Office, Cameron Fire Department, Barron County Highway Department, and Marshfield Medical Center Ambulance.

Details of the Crash

Initial reports from the Wisconsin State Patrol indicate that the semi-tractor-trailer was travelling eastbound on Highway 8 at the time of the incident. The SUV, travelling in the opposite direction, lost control, crossed the centerline, and collided with the tractor-trailer. The impact caused the SUV to veer off into the ditch, while the tractor-trailer came to a stop across both eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway.

Tragic Loss of Life

Despite efforts to save him, the driver of the SUV, a 69-year-old male from Winter, WI, named Gene Elmer Hannack, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Driver’s Condition

The driver of the semi-tractor-trailer, a 52-year-old male from Hudson, WI, identified as Andrew D. Akenson, fortunately did not sustain any injuries. Both drivers had their seatbelts on at the time of the crash.

Ongoing Investigation

The Wisconsin State Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision to determine the cause of the tragic incident.
