INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – A devastating event unfolded in northeast Independence, Missouri, as an officer with the Independence Police Department and a court employee with Jackson County were both tragically shot and killed on Thursday afternoon. The incident also resulted in two additional officers sustaining injuries during the gunfire.
Details of the Double Homicide
The 16th Judicial District Circuit Court revealed that the double homicide occurred during an eviction notice at a residence in the 1100 block of North Elsea Smith Road. The fatal incident took place as multiple civil process servers were carrying out their duties at the location.
As the eviction notice was being served, a person at the residence opened fire, resulting in one of the process servers being shot. Following the shooting, another court employee and a neighbor immediately dialed 911 for urgent police assistance.
Upon receiving the distress call, officers from the Independence Police Department swiftly responded to the scene at 1:09 p.m. Tragically, during their efforts to render aid to the critically wounded court employee, two police officers were also shot.
One of the officers, later identified as Ofcr. Cody Allen, succumbed to his injuries. The process server, identified as Drexel Mack, also tragically lost his life as a result of the shooting. Reports indicate that two additional officers sustained gunshot wounds but are expected to recover fully.
Community and Law Enforcement Response
Following the incident, the unnamed shooting suspect was apprehended and taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Independence Police Chief Adam Dustman expressed that Officer Cody Allen was dedicated to serving his community and always stood by his fellow officers, leaving behind cherished memories of his warm and supportive presence.
Sheriff Darryl Forte confirmed that no Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were harmed during the shooting. The tragic loss has deeply impacted both the law enforcement community and the local residents, with an outpouring of support and condolences being shared for the families of the victims.
