The Tragic Accident in Khao Kitchakut National Park

Tragedy struck in Khao Kitchakut National Park in Chanthaburi as a passenger pickup truck carrying Thai and Russian tourists overturned, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The incident occurred in the Noen Sai area of Khao Kitchakut district at 8.30am on Thursday morning, coinciding with the park’s annual Buddha’s Footprint Celebration festival.

Details of the Accident

The group of 10 visitors, consisting of seven Thai nationals and three Russian tourists, was returning from a visit to the Buddha footprint when the grey passenger pickup driven by Todsaphorn Saowaphong, 30, overturned. The vehicle was found 700 metres from the Phra Bat Luang checkpoint and was reportedly part of a regular shuttle service transporting tourists to and from the site.

Victims of the Accident

Tragically, one Thai national, Yuppharet Thanaporn, 28, lost their life at the scene of the accident. The remaining passengers, including the three injured Russian tourists – Lilila Gabdnakhmanova, 59, Ahiia Ilinava, 60, and Khammatov Almaz, 54 – were rushed to Khao Khitchakut Hospital for treatment. The Thai passengers involved in the incident were identified as Pisit Pibulnurak, 28, Surattana Hammatov, 32, Wimol Phonudom, 23, Naruemon Phongwan, 30, Thani Apibalsri, 24, and Wachirawitch Pornthanapa, 29.

Cause of the Accident

Chanthaburi governor Monsit Paisanthanawat revealed that an initial investigation pointed towards slippery road conditions caused by morning dew as the primary factor contributing to the accident. As a result, both the park chief, Chawin Pinkaew, and the Khao Kitchakut district chief, Thitikamol Sukyen, have been tasked with addressing compensation for the victims involved.
