Stolen Car Chase Ends in Arrest of Convicted Felon in Albuquerque

On a Tuesday night in late January, a stolen Dodge Challenger was finally apprehended by Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office deputies in southwest Albuquerque after weeks of evading capture. The red car had been spotted multiple times in the area, with the driver managing to escape pursuit on previous occasions.

High-Speed Pursuit and Dramatic Capture

During previous chases, the stolen car had reached speeds exceeding 130 miles per hour, leading deputies on a dangerous pursuit through the streets of Albuquerque. This time, with the help of air support, the deputies were able to track the Challenger and deploy spike strips to disable three of the tires. However, instead of stopping, the driver continued to evade capture, driving recklessly and even going the wrong way down a busy street.

After a tense standoff, the driver eventually stopped the car, with deputies surrounding the vehicle and apprehending both the driver and a female passenger. It took six minutes before the suspects were finally in custody, with the driver exhibiting erratic behavior, appearing to be under the influence of meth.

Arrest of Notorious Criminal with a History

The driver, identified as 33-year-old Jude Shulte, is no stranger to the law. With a history of criminal activity, including a previous conviction for drug trafficking, Shulte now faces a new set of charges, including fleeing police and drug trafficking. Deputies discovered meth and fentanyl in the car, linking Shulte to a recent carjacking incident as well.

Following his arrest, Shulte was deemed a flight risk and will remain in custody pending trial. His companion, Mercedez Moraga, was also arrested and charged with drug trafficking. The successful apprehension of Shulte brings a sense of relief to the community, knowing that a dangerous criminal is off the streets.
