According to the complaint obtained by Capitol News Illinois, the conditions at the funeral home were described as “horrific” and likened to something out of a “scary, filthy freak show.” The embalming room was said to be littered with bottles, trash, fluids, sheets, clothes, and unidentifiable objects.
After more than 10 weeks since the complaint was filed, funeral home director Hugh Moran stated that the agency conducted an inspection on Monday. While Moran admitted that the embalming room was “unkempt,” he attributed the complaints to soured business deals. He acknowledged the need to clean up the room and bring in a dumpster.
During a visit to the funeral home, Moran denied entry to the basement where the prep area was located, citing respect for the families he serves. He mentioned that due to a health crisis that sent him to the hospital, he was unable to maintain the cleanliness of the funeral home, leading to the current state of disarray.
Former owner Mark Styninger, who helped Moran operate the business during his rehabilitation, expressed dismay at the conditions he witnessed, including a dead rodent on the floor. Styninger emphasized the need for intervention to prevent such conditions from continuing.
Despite Moran having no prior discipline on his license, Styninger stressed that action must be taken to address the situation at the funeral home.
