The Conviction of Nathaniel Fort in Texarkana, Arkansas

In a recent trial in Texarkana, Arkansas, a Miller County jury reached a verdict in the case of Nathaniel Fort, a 21-year-old man accused of capital murder. The jury found Fort guilty and sentenced him to life without parole, as the death penalty had been waived in this particular case.

The Tragic Events

The incident in question took place on Christmas morning in 2022 at an apartment complex on East 24th Street. Fort, accompanied by his brother Tarus Walker, went to the apartment of Aaron Bruce. Walker was reportedly upset because Bruce had disciplined his children at a Christmas party. Bruce was in a relationship with the mother of Walker’s children, adding tension to the situation.

According to testimony and evidence presented in court, Bruce was shot six times during the altercation. Evidence suggested that Walker fired the first shots, with Fort delivering the final fatal shots after Bruce was already on the ground.

The Legal Proceedings

During the trial, Nathaniel Fort’s attorney, Tabitha Branch, attempted to have the capital murder charge dismissed. She argued that there was no concrete proof placing Fort at the scene of the crime and no evidence of premeditation. However, Miller County Prosecuting Attorney Connie Mitchell and Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jeffrey Sams were able to present a strong case to the jury.

Circuit Judge Brent Haltom ultimately denied Branch’s motion, citing witness testimony that positively identified Fort as the perpetrator. Additionally, a witness claimed that Fort shot Bruce after he was already wounded by Walker.

Conclusion

In a separate trial earlier in the month, Tarus Walker was also found guilty of capital murder in connection with Aaron Bruce’s death. He, too, received a sentence of life without parole in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. The community of Texarkana continues to grapple with the aftermath of these tragic events.
