The Tragic Hit-and-Run Incident in Southeast Edmonton

Over the weekend, a heartbreaking incident unfolded in southeast Edmonton, resulting in the tragic death of a 45-year-old woman. The events that transpired on Saturday night have left the community in shock and mourning.

Arrest Made in Connection with Fatal Crash

Following the fatal hit-and-run crash, authorities launched a manhunt for the suspect responsible for the woman’s death. The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday night in the vicinity of Wainwright, Alberta, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.

Details of the Incident

The incident began when Beaumont RCMP attempted to arrest a person suspected of theft. The suspect, driving a U-Haul truck, fled at a high speed, leading to a series of tragic events.

As the U-Haul truck travelled north on 50th Street into Edmonton from Beaumont, it collided with a civilian vehicle driven by the victim, Kassandra Gartner. Gartner, a married mother of three and the executive director of the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank, tragically lost her life in the collision.

Additionally, another individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being struck by the suspect’s vehicle following the collision with Gartner’s car.

Police Response and Investigation

Authorities had deployed a spike belt on 50th Street and 22nd Avenue S.W. in an attempt to stop the fleeing suspect. The U-Haul truck, after hitting the spike belt and ramming into an RCMP cruiser, continued to evade authorities.

Subsequently, the suspect abandoned the U-Haul and stole a dark grey Honda Civic parked outside a gas station, with a child inside. The child was later found unharmed in the area of 66th Street and 25th Avenue, while the suspect fled in the stolen vehicle.

The stolen Honda Civic was discovered abandoned in a rural area just outside Wainwright, where the suspect was eventually apprehended by law enforcement.

ASIRT Investigation

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been notified about the incident and will conduct an investigation. ASIRT investigates cases involving fatalities or serious injuries during encounters with police, as well as allegations of police misconduct.

The tragic events that unfolded in southeast Edmonton have left a community grieving the loss of a beloved member. The arrest of the suspect provides a glimmer of hope for justice to be served in this devastating situation.
