Accident – Death – Obituary News : The tragic fire that claimed the life of 74-year-old Hema O. Shahani in Sudbury last week has left the community in mourning. Local investigators have determined that the fire was accidental, most likely caused by a space heater left on overnight.

According to a press release from Jon M. Davine, State Fire Marshal, the fire broke out on Feb. 21 around 5 a.m. Shahani, who had limited mobility, was unable to escape the blaze. Two individuals, including a Sudbury police officer and a family member, attempted to rescue her but suffered injuries in the process.

Investigators believe that the two-story, single-family home lost heat on the first floor overnight, leading to the tragic incident. The fire is believed to have started due to a space heater that was left on, causing the coils to overheat. The flames then spread to a nearby closet and continued to engulf the residence.

Multiple agencies were involved in the investigation, including the Sudbury Fire Department, Sudbury Police Department, State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, State Police assigned to the Middlesex DA’s office, and Fire District 14 investigators. Mutual aid companies from neighboring areas also provided assistance at the scene.

Fire Marshal Davine emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors in every home to prevent such tragedies. He expressed condolences to Shahani’s family and all families who have lost loved ones in fires.

As the community comes to terms with this devastating loss, it serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety measures in every household. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Hema O. Shahani during this difficult time..
