SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities in Sedgwick County, Wichita are currently investigating a tragic shooting incident that occurred in a motel room in the 7300 block of E. Kellogg. The suspect behind this harrowing incident has been identified as 20-year-old John Aurthur Griffin, as revealed by Sedgwick County arrest records.
Griffin’s Troubled Past
Griffin’s criminal history reveals a troubling past, with previous convictions for Battery Juvenile Corrections Facility officer, Employer person confined, resulting in his incarceration for a portion of 2022 and 2023. The Kansas Department of Corrections reported that during his time in prison, which spanned approximately 18 months, Griffin was disciplined for various offenses, including battery, theft, fighting, and other crimes.
Details of the Incident
On a Saturday morning just before 9:30 a.m., law enforcement responded to a shooting call at the aforementioned motel location. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two victims in a motel room, identified as 35-year-old Christopher Harrell and 35-year-old Natisha Phillips, both residents of Wichita.
Tragically, Harrell was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced deceased upon arrival. Phillips, on the other hand, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the incident. Additionally, a young child was found unharmed at the location, and authorities are currently providing necessary support to address any psychological or medical needs of the child.
Arrest of the Suspect
Following a thorough investigation, Griffin was apprehended and is set to face charges including Capital Murder, Child Endangerment, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm, according to Officer Kris Gupilan. The circumstances surrounding this tragic event are still being actively investigated by law enforcement officials.
