Tragic Bridge Collapse Claims Two Lives in Maharashtra’s Uran Town
Two individuals tragically lost their lives while two others sustained injuries following the collapse of a temporary bridge in Maharashtra’s Dhutum Creek area of Uran on Monday evening. The incident took place near a concrete bridge that had been in use for over 30 years, serving as a crucial crossing point for locals in the region.
The victims, identified as Avinash Suresh Mirkute (22) from Pimpalgaon in Pen, and Rajesh Lakhsman Waghmare (30) from Varsai, Pen, were part of the Katkari community and worked as brick kiln workers at the Pritam Mumbaikar brick kiln in the Veshwi area of Uran. They had gone to Dhutum creek for fishing under the bridge when tragedy struck.
Details of the Incident
According to senior police inspector Satish Nikam of the Uran police station, the collapse occurred suddenly, burying the victims under debris. Local residents alerted the authorities, prompting a swift response from the police and emergency services. Rescuers managed to extract the victims from the wreckage around 6pm and rushed them to Indira Gandhi Hospital in Uran for medical attention.
Unfortunately, despite efforts to save them, Avinash Suresh Mirkute and Rajesh Lakhsman Waghmare succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The two injured individuals were transferred to MGM Hospital in Kamothe for further treatment.
Cause of the Collapse
The bridge, which had been a familiar landmark for residents in the area, had been used for decades without any major incidents. The exact cause of the collapse remains unknown, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into its construction and maintenance history.
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of two valuable members. As investigations continue, local authorities are working to ensure the safety of other structures in the region to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
