Tragic Avalanche Claims Life of Magrath Man in Backcountry

A devastating avalanche in the backcountry has left a community in mourning as a Magrath man lost his life over the weekend. The incident occurred between Carbondale and Castle Mountain Ski Resort, sending shockwaves through the surrounding area.

RCMP Respond to Avalanche Emergency

On Saturday, February 26th, the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek RCMP detachments were alerted to the avalanche that occurred around 5:52 p.m. The tragic event unfolded while two men and two children were out snowmobiling in the picturesque backcountry setting.

Survivors Escape Avalanche

Despite the harrowing circumstances, one of the men and both children managed to escape the avalanche unscathed. However, the second man was tragically buried under the snow, leading to a desperate search and rescue operation.

Recovery Efforts Lead to Heartbreaking Discovery

Following an extensive search effort involving the Pincher Creek RCMP, Southwestern Alberta Regional Search Rescue, K-9 units, and personnel from Fernie Search and Rescue, the body of the 46-year-old Magrath man was discovered on Sunday afternoon. His remains were carefully transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for further investigation.
